Gardeners Kenton is committed to maintaining high standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks, complying with relevant health and safety legislation and promoting a culture of safe working at all times.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health arising from our work. Health and safety considerations are integral to planning and delivering all gardening services, including lawn care, planting, pruning, hedge cutting, soft landscaping and light garden clearance. We seek to identify hazards in advance, control risks effectively and review our procedures regularly so our work is carried out as safely as is reasonably practicable.

Roles and Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Kenton rests with the company management, who ensure that adequate resources, information, instruction and supervision are provided. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing this policy on site, carrying out or following risk assessments and method statements, checking equipment and ensuring staff follow safe systems of work.

All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must cooperate with the company by following safety procedures, using protective equipment correctly, reporting hazards and incidents, and attending relevant training sessions.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting work at any garden or outdoor space, hazards are identified and assessed. Typical hazards can include uneven ground, manual handling tasks, sharp tools, powered equipment, pesticides, adverse weather, traffic and interaction with the public. Control measures such as safe working distances, cordoning off work areas, correct lifting techniques and the use of personal protective equipment are determined and communicated to staff.

Where work presents higher risk, for example tree work at height or use of certain powered machinery, specific risk assessments and method statements are prepared and followed. Work is not started or continued if conditions are unsafe, such as during extreme weather or when visibility is inadequate.

Training, Competence and Supervision

Gardeners Kenton provides appropriate training to ensure that staff are competent to carry out their duties safely. This may include induction training, tool and equipment use, manual handling, use of chemicals, first aid awareness and site-specific instruction. Only trained and authorised personnel operate powered machinery such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, blowers and similar equipment.

New or inexperienced staff are closely supervised until they can demonstrate a full understanding of safe working practices. Refresher training is given when necessary, particularly when new equipment or techniques are introduced or when procedures change.

Equipment, Tools and Maintenance

All gardening tools, machinery and equipment are selected, used and maintained to minimise risk. Safety features and guards are never overridden or removed, and equipment is used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

Only trained personnel handle such substances, which are stored, mixed, applied and disposed of safely. Efforts are made to use environmentally considerate products and methods wherever possible.

Personal Protective Equipment

Staff are required to use the protective equipment provided and report any loss or damage so it can be replaced promptly.

Client and Public Safety

We plan and carry out gardening work to minimise risk to clients, neighbours, visitors and the general public. Work areas are kept as tidy as practicable, with tools and materials placed to avoid creating trip hazards. Where necessary, signs, barriers or cones are used to make people aware of ongoing work, especially where machinery is in use or access is restricted.

We ask clients to keep children and pets away from work areas and to inform us of any site-specific risks such as underground services, fragile surfaces or restricted access areas. Vehicles are parked and manoeuvred carefully to avoid obstruction and ensure safe access for all.

Accidents, Incidents and First Aid

All accidents, near misses and hazardous situations are reported and recorded so that causes can be investigated and improvements made. First aid provisions appropriate to the nature of our work are available to staff on site. In the event of a serious incident, emergency services will be contacted immediately and the site secured as far as reasonably possible.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
